How can you get rid of bags under your eyes fast?

February 4, 2025

Waking up with puffy, tired-looking eyes is frustrating, especially when you need to look your best. Bags under the eyes may appear for many reasons, such as lack of sleep, stress, aging, lifestyle, smoking, genetics, and even allergies. Whatever the reasons, under-eye bags can make you appear older than actually you are, fatigued, tired, less vibrant, stressed, and all that bad stuff.

Fortunately, there are effective ways to reduce them quickly. Also, there are sophisticated medical treatments that can completely eliminate and prevent them from coming back.

This post will contain two main parts. In the first part, I will advise some home remedies that may help most of you to get rid of or reduce under-eye bags. The second part will contain a medical procedure (dermal fillers) to completely remove eyebags which is effective for those who already tried home remedies and failed.

Let’s get started.

Home remedies to reduce bags under your eyes

If you’re specifically looking for medical treatments, go to the next section (second part) of this post.

Home remedies are worth trying if your eye bags are caused by temporary factors like lack of sleep, dehydration, allergies, or excessive salt intake. If any of these is the case, you can try the following home remedies:

1. Cold compress

Applying something cold under your eyes can shrink swollen blood vessels and instantly reduce puffiness. Try:

  • Chilled spoons (dip spoons in cold water before applying)
  • Ice packs wrapped in a cloth
  • Cooled tea bags (green tea works best)
  • Cold cucumber slices (keep them in a refrigerator for 30 minutes before use)

Leave the compress on for 7-10 minutes for a noticeable improvement. You can also repeat the process 2/3 times daily.

Contact a doctor if you don’t see visual improvements in two days.

2. Eye cream with caffeine

Caffeine helps constrict blood vessels and reduce swelling. Look for eye creams that contain:

  • Caffeine
  • Hyaluronic acid (for hydration)
  • Peptides (to boost collagen production)

Apply gentle tapping motions to avoid tugging on delicate skin. These creams are safe to use for adults. Just make sure it does not go inside the eyes.

3. Hydration and reducing salt intake

Dehydration and excessive salt can cause water retention, making under-eye bags worse. Drink plenty of water and avoid processed, salty foods to keep swelling at bay.

Our bodies are mostly water. Blood, muscles, bones, and everything in our body contains water. We definitely need this water but sometimes our bodies hold too much of it which causes swell.

On the other hand, if you consume more than 2000 milligrams of sodium per day, you must reduce salt consumption. Otherwise, this excessive salt can worsen the issue and cause other problems.

4. Sleeping with your head elevated

Gravity can cause fluid to accumulate under your eyes overnight. Sleeping with an extra pillow or slightly elevating your head can prevent morning puffiness.

When you lie flat, gravity causes fluids to accumulate in facial tissues, leading to puffiness. By propping your head up with an extra pillow or using an adjustable bed, you encourage proper lymphatic drainage and minimize morning swelling.

Too much elevation can cause neck pain or disrupt sleep, so adjust gradually to find a comfortable angle.

While this method can help with mild puffiness, persistent under-eye bags due to fat displacement may require treatments like dermal fillers for long-term improvement.

5. Try a quick lymphatic massage

A gentle under-eye massage can promote drainage and reduce puffiness. Use your index fingers to lightly tap along your orbital bone from the inner to outer corners.

If puffiness comes and goes or improves with rest, hydration, or lifestyle changes, remedies like cold compresses, caffeine-infused eye creams, and proper sleep may help.

However, if your under-eye bags are persistent due to aging, genetics, or fat displacement, home remedies will have minimal impact, and treatments like dermal fillers may be a better solution.

Get rid of eyebags using dermal fillers

This is the second part of this post that I mentioned earlier. While home remedies might provide temporary relief or solve issues that are caused by temporary facts like lack of sleep, they don’t address the root cause.

For long-term results and to address the root cause, you can use any of the following three treatments that can provide dramatic improvements:

  • Dermal fillers: Add volume and smooth out under-eye hollows.
  • Laser therapy: Stimulates collagen production and tightens skin.
  • Radiofrequency treatments: Firms and lifts the under-eye area.

In our clinic at R·MEDYᴹᴰ Aesthetics, we do all of the above treatments and beyond. However, I recommend dermal fillers in the first place to fix eye bags. It’s one of the fastest, most effective, and long-lasting solutions.

We also specialize in advanced dermal filler treatments designed to restore a youthful, refreshed appearance with minimal downtime. If the home remedies don’t work for you, this is the right place to get started.

Why do under-eye bags form?

Now that you know some home remedies and three medical treatments (dermal fillers, laser & radiofrequency) to address eye bags. It’s also important to understand why under-eye bags appear in the first place.

Common causes include:

  • Aging & Collagen Loss → Skin loses elasticity, making under-eye hollows and puffiness more noticeable.
  • Fat & Volume Loss → As we age, fat shifts, creating a sunken or shadowed look.
  • Genetics → Some people are naturally predisposed to under-eye hollows and dark circles.
  • Lifestyle Factors → Lack of sleep, dehydration, and excessive salt intake can contribute to swelling and puffiness.

While skincare and lifestyle changes can help, they cannot restore lost volume—that’s where under-eye fillers come in.

What are under-eye fillers & how do they work?

Under-eye fillers are a type of dermal filler made with hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance naturally found in the skin. When carefully injected into the tear troughs, fillers:

Restore lost volume → Smooth out hollow areas and reduce shadows.

Reduce the appearance of dark circles → Lightens the area by improving skin hydration.

Minimize fine lines & wrinkles → Promotes a youthful, refreshed look.

Deliver immediate results → Noticeable improvement right after treatment.

Unlike surgery, fillers require no downtime, making them the perfect solution for busy professionals, parents, and anyone looking for a quick but dramatic enhancement.

Why choose under-eye fillers over other solutions?

You may have tried eye creams, cold compresses, or home remedies, only to see minimal improvement. Here’s why under-eye fillers outperform traditional solutions:

SolutionEffectivenessLongevityInvasiveness
Under-Eye Fillers✅ High⏳ 9–18 months🚫 Non-invasive
Eye Creams❌ Low📉 Temporary🚫 Non-invasive
Cold Compresses❌ Very Low⏳ Short-term🚫 Non-invasive
Surgery (Blepharoplasty)✅ Permanent✅ Long-term🏥 Invasive

For fast results without surgery, under-eye fillers are the most effective and non-invasive option.
