So what exactly is Hyperpigmentation? Hyperpigmentation is a condition in which patches of skin become darker in colour due to an excess in melanin production.

Melanin is the natural pigment that gives our skin, eyes, and hair their colour. However, when pigmentation goes way past glow and into the territory of “uh oh”, it is important to understand what treatments you can do to help restore your skin’s appearance!

There are 3 common causes of hyperpigmentation:

Inflammation/Skin Trauma:

Hyperpigmentation occurs following skin trauma such as acne, eczema, bug bites, scrapes, cuts, and scratches. Essentially, the skin trauma/injury results in inflammation that then sends pigment producing cells into action, leaving behind a dark spot (long after the injury has healed).

Melasma:

Melasma has been deemed the “mask of pregnancy” and is characterized by the appearance of brown or blue-gray patches and freckle-like spots. Melasma is triggered by a combination of sun exposure, genetics, and hormonal changes.

It has also been reported to be caused by airborne pollutants that bind to the skin making it weaker and more easily damaged by the sun, thyroid abnormalities, and nutritional deficiencies (frequently associated with the deficiency of Vitamin B12).

Sun Exposure:

Although some exposure to the sun’s UV rays may give you that “JLO Glow”, frequent and prolonged sun exposure results in dark sunspots and age spots. These pesky spots are due to the sun’s UV rays hitting your skin, triggering extra melanin production!

So, the question is: what are the best treatments to help get rid of this unwanted pigmentation?

The experts here at The Vancouver Laser and Skin Care Centre highly recommend that you try Picoway or Picosure!

PicoSure™

PicoSure™ is a powerful yet gentle way to address unwanted pigmentation, acne scars, and even fine lines and wrinkles. A light-based treatment, PicoSure™ uses the picosecond aesthetic laser to deliver bursts of energy in trillionths of a second. The burst of energy that is created causes the pigmented cells to squeeze and vibrate, thus breaking them down into tiny particles (all without burning or damaging your skin) and making it easier for your body’s natural healing process to expel it. Basically, it’s like an earthquake for your skin!

BENEFITS

  • Non-invasive and safe on all skin types
  • Addresses brown pigmentation
  • Can be used for tattoo removal
  • Safe and effective for the face and body
  • Offers a gentle solution for sun damage and acne scarring

PicoWay®

PicoWay® is a light-based treatment that targets the superficial epidermal pigment and the deeper dermal pigmentation. Similar to PicoSure™, the photoacoustic energy generated shatters pigmented particles into tiny fragments making it easier for your body’s natural healing process to expel it. However, PicoWay® is the only laser that has three wavelengths in one laser system! This unique feature makes it a precise and effective treatment for addressing a multitude of conditions.

  • Non-invasive and safe on all skin types
